Is raath ki subah nahin? Part 2

I had written about one of the most pleasant memorable night outs here before...

This was something different. One night that saw - a proposal for one.. denial for another.. bachelor party for one.. and jail bars for another..

It was the bachelor party for Priya's marraige. Dreams in her eyes, mehndi, bangles, chains, saree, she looked the bride and all set for marriage, melting away in the arms of her man!!

It was the night when finally Diya had met the man of her dreams..

It was the night when Rathish's dream of marrying Pavithra had been crushed like a castle built in the air..

With mixed feelings all friends set out for a walk, to get fresh air at 1.15 am in the night. It was a 5 min walk. But a walk to remember!! A walk that set marks on everyone of their lives forever!!

Priya, Preethi, Diya, Rathish and Ranjan were singing songs and walking away in bliss.
Music!! The ruffling sounds of leaves against the gentle wind!! Moonlight!! Empty roads!! Street lights!! Stray dogs sleeping by the side of the road!!!

Nothing could have been better!!!

Fate it seems, had better plans for them !!

A jeep came by and stopped in front of them. 10 police officers got down from the jeep and started questioning as to why they were all out. They got nasty cursing the parents for bringing up such irresponsible spoilt brats.

The peaceful night had become a night of terror.

All that was left was.. Panic!!! Fear!!! The seriousness of such a simple act dawned upon them!!

They took away Ranjan into custody. They asked all of them to come to station the next day with their identity cards. And the jeep just disappeared.

If the intentions of the police had really been the safety of the girls, one of them should come till their homes to drop them back. Instead they were asked to report the next day??

The entire world turned topsy turvy and scary in a matter of 2 minutes!!!

Silence.

They walked back home unsure of what to do. All they had done was to go for a walk. In free India.

The great poet Subramania Bharathi said that it was free India only when a girl can walk the roads on the midnight with no fear.

Well, 3 girls walked. With no fear. Was that free India? And an arrest for walking on the roads??

Silence. Injustice. Frustration. Helplessness.

Is raath ki subah nahin??

P.S: Ranjan was released with a fine of Rs.600 and kicks from every boot of the officers who crossed him.

my only question is... why did you all have to give in, why didnt you protest.... ?? .. if educated ppl like us cannot do that, i cant imagine the illiterate ppl giving it a try.... arent we supposed to set an example... arent we the supposedly called youth of the country, the next generation of the country.... if we keep doin this... we wouldnt change, the coutry wouldnt change... and we would keep playing the blame game...... so who is at the loosing end... who is it that is being ignorant... who is it that is not being responsible..... you got all the answers!!!!!!!

well.. one problem was none of them understood the language. I am a person who seeks justice too. BUt practically would it be wise to talk at that night? when a gal is getting married in 2 days? to fight and end up in jail? who knows if they ll file an FIR saying its a brothal case? you can bring lawyers. you can go to court. May be you ll win the case. But the mark that you were once in court never leaves you. and your family. sometimes, it is better to be silent than to throw stone on the gutter knowing its dirty. its called blind foolishness.

wouldnt that be running away from responsibilities.... there is always issues like marriage... maybe after marriage... its gonna be " i have my own family to bother about", after that, i am too old to do anything.... then you keep thinking... i wish i could have done that... no point repenting later... i know its easy on my part to say all that... but then... someday, someone has to take up the reigns... we are not donkeys who would just follow the rest and do what we are told to... if we are doing that... then i dont see a reason of all our education... does education mean... getting degree and getting making good money.... we keep thinking... i can do that... cos my stature is at stake... and then let it go, but then.. these so called cops must have harassed so many other ppl, everybody thinks the same, about themselves... unless and until someone shows them , that we are the leaders of our own life... that we can voice our voice.... that we can fight back, that we do understand the laws, that we do know how to take care of ourselves... how the hell would they know... they would still keep thinking, they rule this world.... everybody keeps cribbing all the time. " this country will never change", "This is India, things wont work", and all that bull sh*t... but did that person who said that.. even try.... nobody wants to try, they just wanna complain, cos its easy.... guys fear, they will be beaten up, gals fear of marriage and family.. every one has got their own problems.... so when is this gonna end... do we have to wait until "The Armageddon"... wait for some super power.... nopes... this is reality, this is life, and we have to fight for our own lives.... comming to the language as a barrier.... why do we call ourselves a secular country, a mutli cultural country and blah blah... when basically we are not.... isnt that a lie ... arent we just posing.... the north cribs about the south... the east fights the west... everyone wnats to fight their own next door neighbour... forget about religion.... has someone really tried doing something.... i mean.. am not expecting... ppl to fight for the freedom again... which we have it on paper but not in reality.... all i wanna say is... why dont you do your part... just live it up to your responsibilities... thats all... the day ppl start doing that... that is when india would be free.. not when woman can walk at midnight by herself... the world is as scary for a man as it is for a woman out there... its just that the man doesnt show it out... the woman does... and who wouldnt take advantage of a weak person... be it a man or a woman.... your life is all what you make it!!!!
